The Timeless Appeal of the Victorian Fob

The Timeless Appeal of the Victorian Fob

Recently, I was fortunate enough to find two incredible antique solid gold fobs for my shop, which inspired me to write this short piece. I did a little jump for joy when I found them at a recent visit to an Antiques Fair. They are visually appealing, fascinating relics of history. These beautifully designed pieces hold a rich history and have become collectible in today's antique jewellery market.

So, What Exactly Are Fobs and Seals?

In the Victorian era, fobs were small decorative ornaments attached to the end of a pocket watch chain. Though their primary purpose was to help pull the watch from the pocket, they became ornamental pieces, reflecting the status, style, and tastes of the wearer. Often made from precious metals such as solid gold or silver, fobs were not only functional but also served as a fashion statement.

Seals, on the other hand, were used to imprint a unique design or family crest into wax, usually for sealing letters or important documents. These seals were often engraved with intricate detail, bearing symbols of significance such as coats of arms, initials, or meaningful motifs. In many cases, the fob and seal were one and the same, with the fob featuring a small seal on the underside.

The Symbolism and Craftsmanship

Victorian fobs and seals were more than just beautiful objects; they were steeped in symbolism. The Victorians were known for their love of meaningful symbols in jewellery, often reflecting emotions, virtues, or even hidden messages. For example, animals such as lions symbolized strength and courage, while birds like swallows represented love and loyalty. In the case of seals, the engraving might convey family heritage, personal identity, or even secret sentiments.

The craftsmanship of these pieces is truly extraordinary. Victorian goldsmiths were meticulous in their work, often using techniques like engraving, repoussé, and filigree to create detailed designs that have stood the test of time. The quality and care that went into each piece are still evident today, which is why these items continue to hold their value..

For those who appreciate the history and artistry of Victorian jewelry, fobs and seals are highly sought-after. Their uniqueness, rich symbolism, and often intricate designs make them stand out as conversation pieces. Plus, they can still be worn today, whether attached to a chain as a pendant or simply as part of a personal collection. Antique fobs still look beautiful worn on a long, gold chain, offering a unique touch to your look. You can see below we had lots of fun recreating this look for a photo shoot using an extra long Italian 9ct Gold Chain.

The two solid gold fobs I’ve recently added to the shop are prime examples of this exquisite craftsmanship.

I was super excited to find this Antique Swallow Fob, a remarkable piece brimming with romance and history. The Swallow in Victorian jewellery were, symbols of love, loyalty, and safe return in Victorian jewellery—a perfect token of affection and devotion.

Each tells its own story, with intricate detailing and rich symbolism that captures the romance of the Victorian era. If you’re as fascinated by the beauty of Victorian fobs and seals as I am, be sure to check them out in my shop—they’re truly one-of-a-kind treasures that connect us to the past.
